Introduction to Knitting

Knitting is easier than it looks! Join us in this hands-on introduction and learn how to choose tools and materials, cast on and off, knit basic stitches, and solve common knitting problems. Ages 13+

Knitting can seem intimidating to the uninitiated. It looks complicated, and it does not help that experienced knitters are often so quick that the whole process can feel overwhelming.

Yet knitting is a craft with a long and fascinating history. People have been knitting for centuries. The oldest known knitted artifact is a sock dating back to 11th century Egypt, though its intricate construction suggests that knitting traditions have existed for much longer.

In this hands-on introductory workshop, you'll discover that knitting is far more approachable than it first appears. You'll learn how to choose yarn and needles, how to cast on and cast off, how to create basic knit stitches, and how to troubleshoot common issues as you work.

By the end of the session, you'll have all the knowledge you need to begin your knitting journey. No prior experience is required!

If you have your own tools and materials you wish to bring in, please do! Otherwise, tools and materials will be provided for you to use during the session.

Important Note: We are unable to offer refunds for participants who are late or missed their program. As well, if a registered participant has not arrived within 15 minutes of the start program time, their spot may be given to a walk-in participant who can pay the materials fee at the Service Desk.

Need to cancel? Please let us know. 

 If you have to cancel your spot for any reason, you can do so by: 

 1.    Logging into MyEvents using your library card.  If you did not register with your library card, you will need the reference number you received in your confirmation email. 

 2.    Phone your local branch, or email oplreference@oakville.ca. Please have ready the program title, program date, and names of registered individuals.
