Join us and become a young scientist today by participating in science-oriented STEAM programs! Ages 5-12
Young Scientist + U is a 7-session, virtual science-oriented STEAM program, operated by U+ Education. Each session will feature a theme from a different field of science, such as physics, chemistry, and biology. Students will learn about interesting fundamental science concepts while conducting hands-on experiments, in turn becoming junior scientists themselves! This program is virtual, but materials will be provided. Parent participation is not required.
Registration is required
Skills learned: Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration
Please review the guidelines and frequently asked questions on our Program FAQ.
How it Works:
1. Register for your project kit - the kit will include everything you need for all 7 sessions.
2. Library staff will email you when your kit is ready for pickup from Iroquois Ridge branch.
3. Join us on Zoom, every Tuesdays at 4:00pm to start the journey to becoming a scientist!
Session 1: Tuesday Jan 10, 2023 - Dazzling Density
Objectives: Participants will learn what density is, how to compare the densities of various liquids and create upside down fireworks in a jar.
Session 2: Tuesday Jan 17, 2023 - Marvelous Matter (Magic Mud)
Objectives: Participants will learn about the 3 states of matter, their properties and create Oobleck (a non-Newtonian fluid that acts as both a solid and a liquid!).
Session 3: Tuesday Jan 24, 2023 - Endangered Environment
Objectives: Participants will learn about ways the environment helps us, and ways we can help the environment. Participants will simulate an ocean oil spill and work together to help clean it up!
Session 4: Tuesday Jan 31, 2023 -- Fancy Physics
Objectives: Participants will learn the basics of motion and be introduced to projectile motion through building a popsicle stick catapult!
Session 5: Tuesday Feb 7, 2023 -- Crazy Chemical Reactions
Objectives: Participants will be introduced to basic chemical reactions and explore evidence for gas-producing reactions by watching a balloon expand!
Session 6: Tuesday Feb 14, 2023 - Brilliant Brain
Objectives: Participants will be introduced to how the human brain works! Action potentials will be demonstrated as a group, and students will have the opportunity to make brain hats!
Session 7: Tuesday Feb 21, 2023 - Creative Chromatography
Objectives: Participants will learn about solubility and learn the basics of chromatography by creating a flower!
