Islam is the second largest religious tradition in Canada, yet not many people know a lot about it. In this presentation, drawn from his One God and Two Religions book, Amir Hussain will talk about basic Muslim beliefs and practices. He’ll do that in the context of Canada, and the changes that the Canadian Muslim community has experienced over the past 50 years. He’ll also discuss some of the issues and prejudices that Canadian Muslims have faced over that time.
Presenter Bio
Dr. Amir Hussain, Professor of Theological Studies, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles
Dr. Amir Hussain, a Canadian Muslim, is Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University, the Jesuit university in Los Angeles, where he teaches courses on Islam, focusing on contemporary Muslim societies in North America. Amir went to school in Oakville, first at Oakwood public school and then Perdue high school, before moving to Toronto to attend the University of Toronto. He served as President of the American Academy of Religion in 2023. The author or editor of seven books and over 60 scholarly articles, his most recent work is as editor-in-chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam in North America, published this year by OUP. He was an advisor for the television series The Story of God with Morgan Freeman, and appears regularly on the History Channel in programs like Ancient Aliens, History’s Greatest Mysteries with Laurence Fishburne, Holy Marvels with Dennis Quaid, and The UnXplained with William Shatner.

Central Branch
Central Branch is the largest of Oakville Public Library’s seven locations. Located in downtown Oakville, it spans three floors of adult and children’s collections, the local and family history collections in the Oakville Room, with spacious meeting and study spaces. Central Branch also serves as the library’s administrative headquarters and shares space with Oakville Galleries. Just steps from Sixteen Mile Creek and Lake Ontario, the branch offers scenic views and a welcoming environment for learning and community connection. With a new facility slated for 2028, the new Central Branch is set to become a landmark building for Downtown Oakville. Guided by community insight, the redesigned library branch will offer flexible and accessible spaces that celebrate Oakville’s history, support lifelong learning, and promote community connections.
